Retail has gone through some exciting times in recent years. Marketplaces such as Amazon, Alibaba and have grown rapidly; new pure players like Zalando and Coolblue have rewritten the rules; technology, including retail technology, has changed everything; shoppers quickly adapted their usual shopping patterns; and ‘traditional’ retail was sidelined. There was a crisis in disposable income, and also in stores; iconic names went bankrupt; and there were boarded-up stores in shopping centres. Many retailers seemed to be surprised by all the changes, disruptions and turnarounds. Peaks and troughs, major successes and painful deceptions, gnawing insecurity and unbridled hope, enthusiasm and optimism all defined ‘the new retail reality’.

However, through all these years, there was also one constant: every year we wrote a new book of our visions, observations, inspiration, opinions and predictions. This edition features our vision regarding: 1. Consumer experience, 2. Employee and 3. Food.
